On the border, on the fence for years. Now the trigger has been pulled. Let's see where this takes me.

Not everything we try works out. That's me and FPV. So I'm bowing out.

I listed my gear on my own blog here. It's all really nice gear and I believe a great price. The whole package could be a great gift for someone.

To the rest of you I say adieu and best wishes. Happy Flying!

I SHOULD HAVE STARTED HERE

Day one for me was not long ago. Like weeks ago. I knew NOTHING.

Today I know very little, but this site and one local guy I met (thanks Kyle!) helped me get started. But it would have been easier for me if I had started here:

Thing is, I didn't even know what the questions were, much less where to look.

So, if you are as new as me, I suggest you start here.

This is not a question. Just sharing.

Rates is a topic I wondered about, but had not seen mentioned on this site.

This video from J. Bardwell and Alex Vanover filled in a BUNCH of gaps in my knowledge. I think it might be useful for anyone just getting started.

Now this is the kind of stuff I'm absorbing.  Very useful info!

@jfpoulin "The data support no conclusions as yet."  I was only saying if there were ways to limit how fast the quad can go, I am intending to implement some controls like that.  I know very little about the myriad details of all this gear.  Learning every day.

LOL.  That's exactly how I felt about the Mobula8 I just destroyed.  I didn't know how to do the settings in Betaflight, but I'm learning now.

Good luck!

Welp, got this one on the way from California.  Flywoo FlyLens 85 HD w/Avatar.

Maybe I can avoid destroying it.

@WheeeFPV Three seconds is enough.  But I was basically stunned by the amazing rapidity of the change from "controlled" to "uncontrolled" flight.  LOL.

LOL.  Yeah, you are all correct.  I expected to crash.  I just wasn't emotionally prepared for losing all of the electronics in 3 seconds of terror!

I'm still getting over the urge to just quit.  I won't quit so soon.  I have too much invested at this point with the goggles x and the boxer and the charger and batteries, etc.  So suck it up and buy another one and try to not kill it right away.

And back to the sims.  The brief hand-on experience was instructive.  It will inform my sim flying too.

My problem with outdoors is I can't fly in my backyard.  I'm under a military red circle.  That's why I was in the shop.  It's nice, with 10' walls 14' peak and 25' x 30' open space.  So there's hope.

Thanks for all of the kind words.

My first cycle of hands-on learning has ended.

Got the Mobula8 in the mail. Got Betaflight installed, connected, configured and after two days, the little guy lifted off for the first time.

Took it out to my shop where there is some room to test indoors.

Ran through three batteries just taking off and learning how to avoid hitting the walls. That was using horizon mode.

Got curious how I'd do on acro mode.

Lifted off, hovered around a bit down to the far end of the shop (30 feet or so) then made an adjustment to avoid the wall.

When I did that, it was all over. The little guy shot like a rocket down the full length of the shop and slammed into the opposite wall with a hearty BAM!

Destroyed the FC board and broke two micro resistors off the camera PCB.

So now I have two frames, 12 props, 4 motors and no electronics.

But I learned stuff!

I bought the Walksnail Goggles X, so I'm 'bought into' the Walksnail Avatar system.  The little drone will show up here with that camera and VTX onboard.

I just got a good image using the HDMI Input on these goggles just a few minutes ago.  That's the first time I've tried to wear them, and at first I was really disappointed.  But after a bit, it became more acceptable, and so I watched some video using them and it was fine.  I guess I won't send them back after all.  LOL.

As Admiral Greer says in The Hunt for Red October, ". . . the data support no conclusions as yet."  I have a LONG way to go before I know enough to have an opinion.

Hang in there!  If this is something you really want, you'll get back around to it.

You can't live in a drone. Nor can you eat one. Probably a good choice.

Thanks to all you who made suggestions.  I wound up buying a Happymodel Mobula8 based on a recommendation from @gleikyle and the fact that it was actually in stock.

It should be here this week.
Thanks!

Thanks Sporni!
A basic problem I have at this point is this: I don't really understand the difference between the types of quads.  Is everything with FPV a cine-something?  Is a freestyle quad one without a camera?  There are a number of different terms used to describe how a quad is put together, but as of today, I've not found a simple explanation of what they mean.
Thanks for the reply!

I was thinking about this as my very first aircraft.

Maybe it's not the best choice, I don't know.

Another one that looks good to my untrained eye:

What would you recommend as a first step after simulators?

Thanks!

There may be some special way to do that, but I typically just use a piece of paper and a pen.  Draw a baseline, align it with the 'ground plane' then mark a couple of points along the center axis of the camera.  Then take a compass and measure the angle.  It's the only method I know always works in every application.

Man! That's a LOT of tight spots.  I'm impressed!  but then, I'm a newbie, so that might not mean all that much.  LOL.
