There are a couple groups on FB in my local(ish) area that I want to go meet up with and fly. One of them seems super laid back and always has guys posting sick spots, but they are the farther group being 1.5-2hrs out. The one that is a bit closer mostly does whoop related things, totally fine by me given that most of my gear is fairly versatile. The closer one put together a whoop race that looks like it would be an absolute blast to go be a part of with the caveat that they were doing it at an AMA owned FRIA, with it explicitly stated in the event description that AMA membership would be required, and enforced. Personally, I don't like that. I'm sure some of their reasoning for wanting to use the FRIA was so people could fly things other than whoops during / after the event but putting it behind the paywall like that felt dumb and counter productive to me. I get it, but also wouldn't want to be forced to support the AMA because to me that organization feels like a skateboarder that became part of city council in the hopes that one day the council will let them skate the spot that they really want to right outside the court house. Then in the process that skater assimilates, becoming a part of the thing that they disagreed with from the beginning. Am I crazy for feeling this way?
