Has Anyone Tried DIY Headtracking for Planes?
Has anyone tried DIY headtracking?
I want to explore it for use with my planes (not my drone, that feels like it would lead to a world of disorientation and catastrophe!)
I have been on the Head Tracker Discord for a few months now, and purchased a DTQSYS headtracking board to build up to fit on my goggles 3.
I've also bought 2 BetaFPV ELRS lite receivers, one to be flashed with Rx as Tx firmware to provide a wireless link from the headtracker to the other one in the module bay of my TX16s, which will add the 3 headtracking axes as 3 additional channels to be sent to my plane for the camera gimbal.
I haven't decided on what camera gimbal to use yet. I was originally introduced to the idea via the motionsic youtube channel, so I may purchase his 'Badass Gimbal'
This is also sold in Europe through 'Lidl' and there's a significant number of people that convert them to RC.(FB group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/767212474336094)
I've done about 6 myself, they are quite robust, and very easy to fix with hot glue. I use them for training new pilots because you can hot glue most of it back together and be flying again in 10 minutes.
Eventually the thing becomes more hot glue than foam, in which cae I rip out all the electronics and put it in a new one
The one in this picture was my best built one and flew great. Unfortunately my son crashed it in dense scrub (lantana for the Aussies) and we didn't find it for 6 months.
