Caddx Protos FPV Kit – The $359 budget digital for New Pilots
The Caddx Protos FPV Kit includes absolutely everything you need to start flying FPV right away. Goggles, drone, radio, batteries, charger — it’s all here. Using Caddx’s brand-new Ascent Digital FPV system, this kit delivers an all-in-one experience for just $359 USD, making it easily the best value beginner FPV kit we’ve ever seen. A true gamechanger for getting people into the hobby.
Kit Overview – $359 Total
Ascent Goggles
Same shell design as the Walksnail Goggle L.
Compact, lightweight box-style goggles with 1080p, 60fps LCD screens.
Runs the new Ascent Digital System.
(Note: My kit required my own battery — unsure if one is now included.)
Caddx Protos Radio
Basic but functional. No external antenna. USB charging.
Uses ELRS, though it’s not officially supported by the ELRS dev team yet.
Comfortable for both thumb and pinch flyers.
Not as polished as the Radiomaster Pocket, but easily the best cheap kit radio I’ve used so far.
Charger + Batteries
Comes with three 840mAh 2S proprietary batteries.
USB-powered charger can charge all three at once.
Be sure your USB source provides enough current, or it won’t start charging.
Protos Drone
Full-plastic 2S quad with position and altitude hold sensors.
3–5 minutes flight time per pack.
Best for beginners, indoor flying, or calm outdoor conditions.
Not suited for freestyle or racing.
Uses the Ascent video system.
No carbon fiber, all plastic frame — simple and durable.
Ascent Video System Performance
Power options: 25mW or 100mW.
25mW was almost unusable. 100mW was significantly better.
Image clarity is not as good as DJI or Walksnail, but better than analog, OpenIPC, or HDZero in my opinion.
Rough scale:
Ascent = 7/10
Walksnail = 8.5/10
DJI O4 = 10/10
Signal penetration is weak compared to Walksnail.
Latency is noticeable and variable — definitely not for HDZero fans.
Signal Breakup Behavior
Caddx’s signal management is unique — it prioritizes keeping an image visible rather than cutting out completely.
Good signal: Normal image.
Weaker: Some pixel smearing and blended details.
Weaker still: Central 50% of screen stays clear, edges lose detail (“focus mode”).
Under 1 Mbps: Switches to black & white.
0.5 Mbps: Only the center remains visible, everything else blacked out.
Latency worsens as signal drops, but the system still tries to maintain a usable image — impressive for the price.
Final Thoughts
For $359, this kit is absolutely insane value. It’s not for everyone — experienced pilots with DJI, Walksnail, or HDZero systems will find their gear superior.
But for newcomers? This is exactly what FPV needs:
Affordable
All-in-one
No soldering or setup headaches
All USB power, no XT30s or balance leads
This kind of consumer-friendly approach will force the rest of the industry to rethink their pricing — just like how the Walksnail Goggle L’s release influenced DJI’s N3 pricing.
Open Questions
How will Caddx develop the Ascent system?
Can they support both Walksnail and Ascent at the same time?
When will Ascent VTXs become available separately?
Time will tell — but right now, this kit is a big step in the right direction for beginner FPV IF they also continue to support walksnail.
Note
My kit was sent to me without any communication from Caddx.
No idea on price, release date, firmware, or updates — nothing.
If it wasn’t for Mad’s Tech’s video, I wouldn’t even know the official launch details.
Let me know your thoughts.
