My family passed away and I ended up in our family home, alone, shortly after that multiple break-in attempts started happening. It's a problem all across town as we dont have enough money for 24/7 coverage anymore (and a casino recently moved in). This made me hate myself even more, I think because of repeatedly feeling helpless in those situations in combination with everything else.
The "responder" that took the reports helped save me from that self-hatred. He gave me back some of my metaphorical value and literal agency of action. He didn't have to do that, but he took the time to talk to me because he heard me putting myself down. Im building a low-cost municipal services UAV company (non law enforcement) to help save money for our town in large part because of what he said to me. You sound like a similar type of person and I am grateful for and proud of people like you and him. Especially now. Thank you for sharing!
(also, 15 years in the service industry, would have been happy to be your sous)
