saving my new sub-100g FPV drone with bare hands!
Hey guys, Walle here from WalleFPV.
Just took our new sub-100g Eagle3 engineering prototype out for its first outdoor hover and motor linearity check today, and well... it turned into a near-fatal flyaway survival challenge! 😂
As you can see in the video, the moment I armed and gave it a slight punch, the high-frequency oscillation went absolutely crazy. Before I could even react, the quad completely lost control and initiated a full-throttled FLYAWAY, screaming and shooting straight up into the air!
To save the fresh Naked DJI O4 Pro camera sensor from smashing onto the concrete or disappearing over the roof, I had to jump and pull off a sketchy bare-hand interception right out of the sky. Luckily, the new custom CNC machined camera guard works great as a hand-hold, the frame is perfectly fine, and I've still got 10 intact fingers to finish the tuning tonight!
The Tech Challenge:
Designing a sub-100g 1.8" True X frame with a Naked O3/O4 setup means balancing weight vs. structural rigidity. The extreme gyro noise on this initial test saturated the PID loop instantly, leading to this sudden runaway.
My plan for tonight back at the bench:
1. Revamp the Betaflight filter settings (sliding up the D-term dynamic filters and tweaking the dual PT1 lowpass).
2. Lower the D-term gains significantly to prevent runaway saturation.
3. Check if the FC soft-mounting is transmitting frame resonance.
Have any tuning gurus here solved mid-to-high frequency resonance causing flyaways on micro 45mm setups without adding heavy carbon beef? Would love to hear your thoughts or filter layout suggestions in the comments!
Proper 4K raw cinematic footage from the O4 will be posted here as soon as I wipe out the gyro noise. Cheers!
