Caddx ascent is the best cheap digital system. A setup with the ascent goggles, radiomaster pocket ELRS, caddx curve 16 (which comes with a 1s charger) and 4 640mah batteries costs about 350-400usd

@Ironclad_8260  Something to consider is that some analog goggles support HDMI in, which would let you get a digital VRX (which is usually cheaper than another pair of goggles) and use multiple systems. The problem is that those analog goggles with HDMI in are more expensive than a lot of the digital goggles.
Personally, I fly really cheap analog, but am waiting for updates on the caddx ascent system.
If the new ascent goggle (that i heard may be in the works) shows that ascent may replace Avatar, I may buy into that system.
There may also be compatibility between Ascent and OpenIPC with some bootloader shenanagins, which could make an open source software to run on ascent hardware (and possibly other systems hardware too)
I am quite uncertain at the moment about these things, but I will see how things shake out.

On another note, I have a happymodel Mobula8 analog and I love it! its my favorite thing for freestyle, indoor and outdoor.

Dont worry about the lack of BNFs for the ascent system, adding a digital vtx to other drones is quite easy, and often doesnt even require soldering.

Its a very inconsistent issue, and im not going to try to fix it. It would be more worth my time to upgrade, and i believe its a hardware issue (the usb port shorted to the battery lead on the bench and caused a lot of weird grounding things)

Currently have my gps set up on radio telemetry with the qr code LUA script. My telemetry is really reliable compared to my osd which sometimes just doesnt work. I will still add them though, even if its just for redundancy

First real mountain flights with the 3in! Clearly I have a lot to learn, I went out of LOS because I thought the clearing at the base of the peak in the first clip was the one I launched from, but it wasnt 😆.

The second flight went a bit better, but my fpv camera ate a bug on the way down and got really smeary.

Third flight went off without a hitch, though!

Things I learned:

For the first flight at a new location, check the surroundings and pay attention to the home arrow and distance.

The wind up in the mountains is no joke! I was fortunate in that it was going up the slope in all the flights, and increased my flight times, but if it was going the wrong way, things could have gone very differently.

I should probably increase my camera angle for dives.

More to come, if i don't lose the drone. (hopefully longer flights too, I only used about 30% battery per flight, even on the small batteries)

@Ironclad_8260 I have never bought anything off this platform, but i wouldn't recommend buying anything off marketplace unless you can meet up in person, and look at what you're buying before you buy it.

I also think a tiny whoop is by far the best option for cheap fpv because of the durability.
You wont end up needing super expensive spare parts, if you break the whoop at all. I have had a mobula 8 for a year now, and i still find it more fun than my 3in because i am never worried about crashing it.

The first thing i would look into is getting some used gear if you can find some available near you (facebook marketplace maybe?). That was how I got my first quad (a mobula8) with spare parts, goggles, remote etc. I have a Runcam thumb pro w and it works, but i think the thumb2 is a significant upgrade and fits well on my 3in. I wouldnt recommend getting an action camera to start, though, but having it as an option for the future is a good idea. You will probably also need some equipment as well (soldering iron etc) for building/repairs. Oscar Liang has really good documentation on a lot of prebuilt stuff, and loads of tutorials for getting set up, and good product recommendations.

I love a good 3d printing project! I have printed some 2in frames in PET-Cf and they were really rigid and would fly great, but weren't nearly as durable as regular frames in crashes. If you designed a frame with easily swapable arms (maybe where the arms slot into the base and have a plate screwed into them) that wouldnt be nearly as much of an issue. Good luck!

Already running nd16 on 1/30 shutter speed unfortunately. Just need to put some new props on. Would a less wobbley camera mount help?

Got 2.9km of range on a sub 250 3 inch drone!

This was done with only 350mw of analog video, with a HGLRC hammer on the drone and a DIY 5 turn helical antenna made from FalconRadFPV's tutorial on my goggles. I may make it into a 7 turn antenna sometime soon, but for now this is plenty far.

The recording camera is a runcam thumb pro w

Even a small breeze will cause some of the shakiness of the video, but most of the remaining jello is from the well used props

I will be heading back to this location in a future flight and hang around a bit more, I landed back home at about 35% battery

Almost done with the 3in sub250 medium range build, just waiting on some correctly sized battery straps to come in. Getting over 10 minutes of freestyle flight time on 4s 1100mah LIHV so Im going to try some long range here soon with 350mw of analog and a DIY 5t helical antenna.

top speed is about 130kph, and the drone is still really agile for the flight times it gets (thanks @AurilFPV :) )

Just need to find a cool place to fly and I'll post a video from it.

This is a really cheap stack, only 40a but the esc did quite well in a Chris Rosser test.
I do not have one myself, so i cant confirm the  quality of anything about it, but 40$ is a really reasonable price

Ill post an update with the antenna setup and a long range flight as soon as i get that battery in, and a longer distance. Im ordering a 1100mah 4s lihv 60c, so my build will even stay sub 250.

Unfortunately i cannot get any good 18650 pack that weighs less than 124g. I could make a 145g liion, but it would be 3s, further reducing thrust. Drones like the Deepspace Roc4 sit at around 4:1 thrust to weight on a 4s 3000mah liion pack, at an AUW of 380g. They use 4024 bi blade props, and 3000kv motors.
My drone isnt built for long flights like that drone is, so i think i will just stick to lihv until i get a bit of long(er) range experience under my belt. I may reconsider in the future, but that will work for now. Who knows, maybe ill just build a 7in! Thanks for the help!

Found a chart for the lannrc 1404 4600kv + motors, and it is from testing with a 4024 prop. I currently am using 3016 props so it isnt all that useful.

@AurilFPV currently limited on range by battery, i have a homemade 5 turn helical antenna on my goggles (ev800d) and have flown to 2km on lipo. I like the prop idea and will give that a try, and also get a 850mah 4s, it should help a lot because my current 720mah lihv is a bit degraded. I have a really long antenna on the quad, so my signal is just as good when flying toward and away from myself. What are your thoughts on a 1100mah lipo?

Also the oscarliang.com motor chart recommends 450 to 850mah for freestyle for a 4s 3in triblade build with a lower kv motor (3000 to 4200, i have 4600)

As far as adding a higher power vtx goes I cant fit anything larger than the current zeus nano in the frame. I can increase video range with a 7 turn helical though, so i will probably make one of those.
Thanks for the feedback!

Ok, i was just looking at drones like the deepspace roc 4 and wondering if my drone could do that. Thanks for the input!

My build is currently 156g, and a 3s 18650 pack with the jp30 cells would be around 145g, AUW would be around 300g. What do you think of this for flying up mountains etc? I have a 4s 720mah and i can get about 4.5km round trip flights on it at about 7mins flight time. What sort of flight times could
you get cruising with a 850mah?

What would give better responsiveness, a 3s 18650 jp30 pack, or a 4s one? This is for a 3in drone with 4600kv motors, and i am looking to do long range (5 to 10 km) but still dive down things. Or should i just stick with 4s lihv (an 850mah maybe)?

Note: I am using 350mw analog so anything over 5km is pushing the video to its limits, is it worth having a stupidly long flight time at the cost of a sluggish quad?

@jfpoulin Do note that the rssi low warning that will show up on your betaflight osd is different, and does mean you are about to lose your radio link. Happy flying!
