Ok so I walked away from analogue before I really worked out how to make it work well. My take was/is everything had to line up, antenna, channel/frequency, electrical noise reduction and output power. Best quality rx and rx, diversity and heat management. Still same issues with digital, but it does just work barring long range. But unless it’s improved recently all for a low res image that pales in comparison… is it better now? I am not so good that latency matters yet, but I concede it might be a thing soon. I want to see your examples. I did watch some races from the nationals the other week and most were crud but some were very very good.

Keen to hear more of real world experience on the Ascent. The reviews I saw showed terrible latency, but it could be that firmware updates will improve. I, or my kids a re hard on the quads so if its suitable it might fill the gap and I will go to GT2 for LR. I don't want to spend another $1k AUD on new goggles and don't really want to share my Goggles X either.

I usually like to fly close and play with Gaps, it would be worth testing at those prices and if not good enough for me I can roll it down to Kids gear, or cinewhoop style sub 250 2.5 - 3,5" fleet I have or planned to have.

Yeah Thanks. I guess it was only the fact WS is getting more expensive and DJI seems to be getting cheaper. I still remember the messing around in the early days with firmwares and antenna selection and low power modes and the range was only ever about 300m regardless but that has definitely improved in later models/firmwares.  I know DJI has limitations and I don't like that I have to buy Goggles 3 to be future proof. This is exactly the answer i was looking for. Thanks.

I started with Mobula 7, I recently blew up my fatshark VRX for analog and wow they are expensive now, I think I will just pull out the analogue stuff. I don't know how anyone still flies analdog.. but to start out it adds so much complexity. We are spoilt for digital choice now. I would start with a cheap and nasty analogue eachine goggles or something, just to keep the costs down, then when you crave a little more power and weight the Crux 35 is super cheap and fly's more like a larger drone, cheap to fix and can handle a digital system of choice, but as others have said you want to be sure which way you want to go with digital as it can be a big investment and will keep you locked there.
Currently fly walk snail and want DJI...But if I was staring out I would consider the new budget ascent systems, they seem to review ok for the price and you won't be needing range of the GT2 to start with. Walksnail is good.

Do you think the prices will flip and make DJI a more affordable option than Walksnail for those outside the US?

Sorry this ended up longer than I want because I dont need to know if one is better than the other, just if any one else also speculates the cost of change will make it more accessible in the future. or have some facts to back this.

Is it worth converting a fleet requiring significant investment?

I went Walksnail early on and paid a lot less than it currently retails for, because they were cheaper and offered better options for sub 250 Drones...about 5 years ago. A lot has changed since. I don't hate the walksnail stuff I actually love it, and don't love a closed ecosystem. I have had several different VTXs, and even my original Avatar PRO VTX that survived a dip in a pool is my daily driver until I kill it. I expect my Goggles X to keep working too...

I also love it when stuff just works, there is so much tinkering in this hobby, its noice to have something just work out of the box. WS stuff is better now for sure, I recently had a GT and it was a lovely bit of kit, it did just work and the range was great. But I am noticing there is increasing parity in price between DJI and walksnail and even the DJI air units being cheaper than Avatar. I shop local when I can but do spend a lot of time investing in Ali express and see it there.

I think it is the restrictions in the US shifting the demand. I fully believe the DJI system is better for range, image and operation, though never used one. I would just try it out but the investment to change is substantial, I have watched a lot of reviews and spent a lot of time on the walksnail stuff getting it to do what it claims. I am at standardizing parts to reduce my building time and increase my flying time so I am ready to choose what is better and available going forward, than what is cheaper. I would love to hear what Aussies have to say.

But if you are limited in choice or have to choose it, I fully rate walksnail, though like ELRS it has a few extra step to get it dialed in but works well when you do.
